And to you, a boot to the head

Marcel sand and goldfish.

I am having a rather sensational night life these days.

Marcel has dreams that are big.  Marcel has needs that are bigger.

Take last night for example: after finding his way to my room, and settling in next to me around 2:00 am, I am awakened to full throttle screaming an hour later; No Sammy! That is MY book. GIVE IT BACK! I try to soothe him, and let him know he is dreaming. This is apparently not what one is supposed to do. He screams louder; I AM NOT DREAMING!!!! DON”T TAKE MY BOOK. GO AWAY! And then he kicks. Or hits. Or both. He is asleep seconds later while I lay there stunned, and full of adrenaline.

Then there was the sweet waking which went like this an hour or so later; Mommy I want you to hold me right now. I just love you. I want a donut. Get my B.B. King book. Don’t let Sammy eat my donut or my book…. And then he goes back to sleep.

Yesterday while half awake my little dictator sees me in the kitchen and demands; Mom come here right now and get into your bed! Did you hear me? Don’t ignore me.! It is moments like these where I pause and wonder many things..

All of this I prefer over waking to a foot in the eye socket, when #two adoring son finds that #1 adoring son has made his way into the bed before he did. Full on face kick from my mini monster Marcel on Thursday.  It may be time to borrow Sam’s Star Wars fighter helmet for protection.

How’s your parenting night life?

  1. My parenting night life is similar to yours. I haven’t any advice, only sympathy for what you’re going through because it’s exhausting for the night parent and when the kids are overtired or have had sleep interrupted by moving from bed to bed they’re tired the next day and it’s all difficult for everyone to deal with. Last night’s scene sounds like night terrors; as disturbing as they are for the parents who witness them, the the kids apparently (from what I’ve just read on the Web, and from my experiences with my son’s night terrors) don’t remember anything. My son has them occasionally, and it doesn’t take long to realize that the “right thing” to say is never a rational reply to whatever he’s saying, or arrived at by anything other than chance – a wild guess, in other words – or, as suddenly as he woke up screaming, he falls asleep and it’s as if nothing happened.

  2. Parenting just got harder! I’d heard about the toddler years but living them is something quite different! I have no idea how you manage TWO boys. Boys are insane and toddlerhood must be some kind of temporary insanity. Anywhere inside is a kind of nightmare. When he’s outside and free, we’re are both happiest. A couple of sticks, a fence, a pile of dirt.

    Still he’s wonderful ;)!

  3. D’Lo will be three next week and I just got him to stop begging for a “booby” all night…AD is fourteen months old and he gets a booby too (thank You, God for giving me two boobs). I remember a pastor once talking about the importance of intimacy between a husband and wife, talking about making “night time the right time” and so on…well, night time hasn’t been the right time for about, um, sixteen years for us, lol. I just try to remember that, although I’m exhausted and highly frustrated at times, once this time is gone…it’s just gone. So, enjoy that boot to the head, Girl. You’ll miss it one day 🙂

  4. My night life consists of me being up every 2.5 hours or so to change and feed a seemingly starved baby, by the way he screams and then chugs his bottle:). I wouldn’t trade it for anything, though….

To be honest, I’m kind of scared to see what he’ll do at 2 years old!

  5. Awww =(. I think, if we try hard enough we can really make that helmet fashionable.

My parenting night life has been changing, its unsettled, forever in transition… in transition is just a nicer way to say homeless. Last night I was parenting from a family shelter. But the upside to that is that I got the chance to tuck my little girl into a big bed, even if the mattress gave me a back spasm. Cheers for the physical and the mental huh. ((Hugs))

  6. Popping in to say that I’m a recent follower of your blog, and I love it! I featured your blog on mine today in a post spotlighting multicultural/racial family bloggers, as well as to give you a blog award. I’m looking forward to continuing to read your blog in the future!

  7. On a good night, I don’t wake up when Elfe crawls into the twin-sized pull-out sofa-bed in the living room in the middle of the night…the one I’m sleeping on because she had an accident in my bed last week and I still don’t have any clean sheets for it…

  8. I am having fewer and fewer nights like the one you described. But yes, I have taken a foot to the throat on many nights. And if one comes to our bed and stays, the second is sure to follow. I don’t know what I did with all that sleep I used to get BK, or Before Kids. Really, I don’t. 😉
