We Your Boys (original poem)

Having a blast looking through poems I’d like to include in my first ever collection, and preparing for the faculty talent show this year. Here is one of my favorites, and the poem that inspired it. Of course Ms. Brooks had a much heavier intent than I do. Since I am usually the heavy, I appreciate being on the lighter side.

We Your Boys

We Your Boys. We
Make noise. We

Nix naps. We
Log laps. We

Pass plates. We
Share traits. We

‘Night Moon. All
grown soon.

We Real Cool
The Pool Players. Seven at the Golden Shovel
by Gwendolyn Brooks

We real cool. We
Left school. We

Lurk late. We
Strike straight. We

Sing sin. We
Thin gin. We

Jazz June. We
Die soon.

  1. Your sons look so sweet, I doubt that they ever make too much noise or try to skip their naps! 🙂 Your poem is the antithesis of the one by Gwendolyn Brooks: Here’s sending out my wishes that their lives will also be the antithesis. With you looking out for them, that’s a good bet! Best of luck at the talent show.
